Pinewood Derby 2009

DERBY

Benjamin participated in his first Pinewood Derby tonight.  He won second place!  It was so fun to watch his excitement as his car came in first on several runs.  Each boy got to race their car eight times. Then the top four got to race again.  There was only a one second spread between the top four cars.   Ben designed the car and helped with it, but Dad really gets the credit for it’s success.  What a great team!  continue reading...

Benja “boy”

This month is Ben’s half birthday.  Dad got to take him on his date because heBEN wanted to see the same movie that I saw with Bethany last month, but I still want to blog about what a great kid he is.

First of all you have to know that Benjamin is the oldest of five kids and he is only eight.  That means he automatically ends up with a lot of responsibility and pretty high expectations from Mom and Dad.  The amazing thing is that he really rises to those expectations in wonderful ways.

First of all, he is very good student.  He really excels in Math and reading.  He loves to learn and is very good at memorizing facts about things that interest him.  continue reading...

Boys to Men

Capture_thumb5I have to admit that I’m a Dr. Phil fan.  I don’t get to watch it often, but I record it on the DVR and pick and choose an episode once or twice a week to watch while I feed Ian.  He said something today that really stood out to me… “We don’t raise children.  We raise adults.”

I guess that is just restating the obvious but it reminded me that parenting is not just about now.  As parents our job is to teach our children what they need to know so they can face the challenges of being an adult with the knowledge and skills they will need. The degree to which we do that job has a lot to do with how prepared they are to meet the responsibilities of adulthood with success. continue reading...

All Your Eggs in One Basket

Easter basket Friday was a good day.  I have to blog about it because it was one of those day when almost everything went right.   The kids were happy, they played well together and kept each other entertained (without TV), and I got a lot done.  Laundry was caught up (for the night anyway), I made progress on getting the house in order (again), and I still had time to make Ian’s Easter basket.   When it was finished, I placed it on the fireplace with the other kids’ baskets in preparation for the Easter Bunny.  It didn’t take long for the kids to realize Ian’s basket didn’t have any plastic eggs in his.  Bethany, Hyrum, and Jenna each quickly put some eggs from each of their baskets into his.  His ended up with the most.  I thought that was so sweet. As a mom, one of my greatest desires is to teach my kids to love and serve each other.  Perhaps I’m doing something right. continue reading...

Our Hear Deavenly Daughter

Bethany and I celebrated her half birthday today.  We went to see “Monsters vs. Aliens” and then to Pizza Hut to use her gift certificate for a free Personal Pan Pizza that she earned for reading at school.  It was so fun to spend one-on-one time with her.  I just love this beautiful girl so much… let me tell you just a few reasons why.

She still starts every prayer with “Our Hear Deavenly Father.”  I have tried correcting her in the past, but it is so cute and endearing that I haven’t pushed it.  Her prayers are very sincere. She is thoughtful about what she is thankful for and mentions different things specifically.   She also has growing testimony that she is anxious to share in family home evening, Primary, and even once in Sacrament meeting. continue reading...
