Down Economy Affects Lemonade Stands
Submitted by Jen Smith on Sat, 05/16/2009 - 14:18Ben and Bethany have anticipated selling Cookies and Lemonade at the neighborhood garage sale since they made $16 last spring. To earn even more, Bethany painted and drew several pictures and Ben folded several paper airplanes.
Unfortunately, our neighborhood garage sale got rained out. It was rescheduled at the last minute with minimal participation. They tried setting up in two different locations without success. continue reading...
Pinewood Derby 2009
Submitted by Jen Smith on Tue, 04/28/2009 - 19:00Benjamin participated in his first Pinewood Derby tonight. He won second place! It was so fun to watch his excitement as his car came in first on several runs. Each boy got to race their car eight times. Then the top four got to race again. There was only a one second spread between the top four cars. Ben designed the car and helped with it, but Dad really gets the credit for it’s success. What a great team! continue reading...
Benja “boy”
Submitted by Jen Smith on Tue, 04/28/2009 - 18:50This month is Ben’s half birthday. Dad got to take him on his date because he
wanted to see the same movie that I saw with Bethany last month, but I still want to blog about what a great kid he is.
First of all you have to know that Benjamin is the oldest of five kids and he is only eight. That means he automatically ends up with a lot of responsibility and pretty high expectations from Mom and Dad. The amazing thing is that he really rises to those expectations in wonderful ways.
First of all, he is very good student. He really excels in Math and reading. He loves to learn and is very good at memorizing facts about things that interest him. continue reading...
Boys to Men

I have to admit that I’m a Dr. Phil fan. I don’t get to watch it often, but I record it on the DVR and pick and choose an episode once or twice a week to watch while I feed Ian. He said something today that really stood out to me… “We don’t raise children. We raise adults.”
I guess that is just restating the obvious but it reminded me that parenting is not just about now. As parents our job is to teach our children what they need to know so they can face the challenges of being an adult with the knowledge and skills they will need. The degree to which we do that job has a lot to do with how prepared they are to meet the responsibilities of adulthood with success. continue reading...
I Just Can’t Win
Submitted by Jen Smith on Thu, 03/19/2009 - 18:29Every Wednesday the PTO at Ben and Bethany’s school sells popcorn for a quarter as a fundraiser. More often than not, I forget to send the quarter and the kids come home disappointed. This week, the school was also raising money for the Make A Wish Foundation to help out a boy in the Boise area name Abiyu. The kids would receive a piece of candy for donating a quarter to the cause. I actually wrote a reminder in my planner to send quarters this week for both fundraisers. Sweet Bethany even decided to donate an additional dollar of her own money to Abiyu w continue reading...
